8 Great Electric Cars Launched in 2022

Electric and hybrid cars are well on their way to a global conquest, with the government’s 2030 ban on petrol and diesel cars looming. In fact, in 2021, Electric cars took up 11% of the entire UK car sales market, an increase of 76% compared to 2020.

It’s hardly surprising, given the plethora of advantages of having an electric vehicle.

Benefits of having an all-electric car include:

Lower running costs  – With petrol prices soaring, more and more people are investing in electric cars to save money overall. On average, an electric car costs less than £1.50 to drive 100 miles, vs a petrol car costing over £12.

A cleaner environment – One of the biggest issues with petrol and diesel cars, is the harm their emissions have on the planet, with some UK cities being so polluted, they’re described as a public health emergency. All-electric cars have no tailpipe and don’t emit any exhaust gases at all, reducing local air pollution, particular in cities.

Free parking – Do you ever drive round and round looking for parking, before getting fed up and heading home? Electric car users don’t feel that pain! In most UK cities, you’ll find free parking bays dedicated to electric cars only, some including charging points, making your trip to the shops even easier!

Government funding – The government offers a few different schemes that offer grants, to help with your decision to switch to all-electric. This also includes a discount for installing a charging point at home. You can find out more on this here.

Increased value – The government ban is only 8 years away, where sales of new petrol and diesel cars will be completely banned. This is great in terms of electric cars however, as resale value is set to soar! Why wouldn’t you want to make the change sooner rather than later?Year after year, electric car manufacturers come out with innovative new models and features, with 2022 being one of the greatest yet, with sports cars reaching speeds of 160mph, to family-friendly cars with built in plugs! In this feature, we talk about our top 8 electric cars of 2022, all available to lease through AVL.

Aside from being aesthetically pleasing, Tesla has kept up with their reputation of building some of the fastest accelerating cars on the market. The Model 3 follows suit, giving some impressive figures, particularly with their Performance upgrade.

Both setups are impressively fast for a family car, with the 226bhp reaching 60mph in 7.3 seconds and the 321bhp at 5.2 seconds.

Fiat 500

Fiat 500

The classic Fiat 500 – one of the most iconic city cars on the market, with a reputation reaching more of a female audience. Their new all-electric model, however, is guaranteed to bring interest from all genders and generations.

Fiat offers a couple of different motor and battery sizes, as well as three core equipment levels; Action, Icon and La Prima. They also offer a Red special edition.

With 118 miles offered from one single charge of the standard 24kwh battery,, the Fiat 500 is the perfect car to run you from place to place and assist you with  your daily commute at an incredibly low cost. Upgrade to the ‘City Range’ however, you’ll have a 42kwh battery, and the ability to drive 199 miles without needing to stop at a charging point.

Considering the smaller size of the Fiat 500, its top speeds are incredibly impressive. With two different motor sizes, you have the potential to reach speeds up to 93mph on the ‘Long Range’ model. Whilst the ‘City Range’ is designed with city driving in mind, at a lower speed, it’s still capable of reaching 60mph in 9 seconds!

The new all-electric version certainly keeps the build and unmistakable look of the standard Fiat 500 that we all know and love. Whilst the electric model is ever so slightly longer, parking is still easy peasy, being smaller than the Honda E.

The standard entry level model is flush with its kit, with an optional Radio Pack and a smartphone cradle as a standard, taking care of the infotainment. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come as a standard feature with the Icon and La Prima models, with a sharp  10.25 inch touchscreen and integrated satellite navigation system.

BMW iX3

If you’re looking for a bigger car, the BMW iX3 all-electric SUV should be at the very top of your list for consideration! After all, it’s one of BMW’s best sellers!

With the iX3, BMW has gone its own way, avoiding the massive power and all-wheel-drive arrangement found in many competitors, yet still feeling quicker and more agile than ever before. Buyers can expect the standard, solid BMW build, comfort and impressive on-board tech to keep the whole family entertained.

You’ll find two different trims available on the iX3, the M Sport and M Sport Pro, which are both capable of speeds up to 112mph and can go 0 to 60mph in 6.8 seconds! You’re also covered for longer journeys, with approximately 286 miles covered before needing to charge.

The iX3 has a minimal, but impressive interior, with a 12.3 inch infotainment screen that sits suavely alongside a dial cluster of the same size. Comfort is key to all BMW’s, but especially the iX3, including sport seats, a standard that are heated in the front. Most astoundingly,  you’ll find a three-zone climate control system with pre-conditioning functionality. This allows the driver to set the temperature inside the vehicle remotely via their phone, before even starting their journey.

The difference between trims is small but effective, with the M Sport including 19 inch alloy wheels, a panoramic sunroof and adaptive suspension, and the M Sport Pro being slightly superior with its 20 inch alloys (with a two-tone paint finish) and upgrades such as acoustic glass available. Parking is an absolute dream in both trims, with BMW’s Parking Assistant coming as a standard.

Jaguar I-Pace

Stepping bravely into the unknown world of electric cars, Jaguar have absolutely aced expectations with the release of their very first all-electric car, the Jaguar I-Pace. Jaguar have made no secret of how hard they’ve worked to make sure perfection was achieved, with billions of pounds poured into its development and well over 1 millions miles driven whilst testing prototypes. Jaguar has described the I-Pace as the most important car since the E-type, and we completely agree! Any success with the I-Pace is entirely well deserved.

The perfect mix of SUV, sports and performance car, the Jaguar I-Pace will take you from 0-60 in only 4.8 seconds, with complete and utter silence. Its 90kwh battery is expected to drive you from the top of the UK to the bottom, covering a ginormous 292 miles on just one charge, saving you approximately £80 in a petrol car.

The interior is certainly not to be missed out here. Its gloss black and metal panelling combined with upholstered leather surfaces is nothing short of luxurious, and that’s before you look at the swanky 3 digital screens and centre console. It’s almost comparable to the Tesla Model 3, but with physical buttons on the console instead of touchscreen.

Also included as standard is a satellite navigation system, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Bluetooth.

Lease the Jaguar I-Pace from £918.41 per month (incl VAT)

Polestar 2

As part of the Swedish-born Volvo family, there was no doubt in our minds that Polestar’s very first all-electric car would be a winner!

The Polestar 2 is a unique five-door hatchback, with a saloon inspired body style, giving the look of a crossover with the option of it being a family car too.  A vegan leather interior set’s the Polestar 2 aside from its competitors, offering an interior with absolutely no animal products used.

There’s 3 versions of the Polestar 2 model available, with both dual and single motor setups on offer depending on your preference.

Perfectly explained by Polestar themselves “Three powertrains are now on offer for Polestar 2. The existing 300 kW (408 hp) dual motor setup with a large 78-kWh battery pack is still available. It now has two front-mounted single motor versions for company, available either with the same long-range battery and a 170-kW motor, or a smaller, standard-range battery (64 kWh) and a 165-kW motor.”

Performance is impressive, with the potential of reaching speeds of 127mph and reaching the all important 0-60mph in just 4.5 seconds! Even the single motor options hit 0-60mph in 7.0 seconds.

Technology wise, the Polestar 2 has gone futuristic, with a centre touch-screen powered by Google. This works insanely well with its built-in satellite navigation system, bringing up points of interest with ease and offering real-time traffic updates. Most function are controlled by the touch screen, including climate controls and, driving settings and the built-in external cameras, making parking entirely stress-free
